The KOH string test is common in veterinary labs for quick presumptive identification of the gram reaction of a culture. A loopful of the culture is placed on a slide and 3% KOH added. The formation of a string (DNA) indicates that the isolate is a gram negative organism. Results should then be verified by gram stains.
