The induction coil provides extremely high voltages, typically in the tens of thousands of volts, from a DC source. The operating principle is based on a step-up transformer consisting of a primary winding with a few tens of turns and a secondary winding with hundreds of thousands of turns. To produce permanent sparks, it is necessary to interrupt the current flowing through the primary winding using an electromagnetic bell, also known as a shaker. The induction coil stands 6 inches tall, 11.5 inches wide, and 7 inches long. Each spark rod measures 5.25 inches long and 2.25 inches wide.
